Property settlement is the process that occurs when transferring a property from one person to another. Property settlement occurs, for instance, following the breakdown of a relationship and the resolution of property division by the Federal Circuit & Family Court. It can also apply as a result of an inheritance or any other transfer of property.
There is an important distinction between conveyancing and property settlement. Conveyancing refers to the transfer of the legal title of a property from one person to another. Property settlement, however, includes the entire property transaction, including such matters as property division, contract review and contract negotiation.
