Facilitation is a process in which the parties with the assistance of a dispute resolution practitioner – the facilitator – identify problems to be solved, tasks to be completed or specific disputes to be resolved. Facilitation may conclude at that point; however, the process can be flexible enough to enable the parties to continue their endeavours to enable them to pursue a resolution concerning the matters before them. The facilitator may advise on the process of facilitation but would normally not have any advisory or determinative role. It should be noted, however, that as with any form of dispute resolution the parties may establish hybrid processes that are specific to their particular needs.
